چکیده

Growing number of studies report on the improved sensitivity of various imaging modalities in detecting abnormalities within tumours. Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) microscopy is a novel optical imaging technique which is advantageous in terms of greater multiplexing capability, minimal or no photobleaching of the Raman reporters, better spatial resolution and low signal-to-noise ratio within complex biological environment. For the enhancement of the Raman vibrational signal in SERS bioimaging, gold nanoparticles (GNP) are the most viable among metal nanoparticles because of comparable ease in controlling its size distribution and biocompatibility, among other parameters. GNP based SERS nanoprobes can be synthesised by tagging Raman reporter and conjugating with target specific biomolecules. Because of GNP’s wide-ranging optical properties and narrow and distinct signal from SERS, other labelling methodologies like fluorescence microscopy, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), etc. can also be implemented along with SERS bioimaging, by tagging fluorophores, magnetic nanoparticles, etc. This review focuses on various structures and shapes of GNP, fabricating GNP based nanoprobes and the multiplexing and multi-modality capability of GNP based SERS nanoprobes. *Corresponding author: Malini Olivo, Department of Nanobiophotonics and Imaging Group, National University of Ireland Galway, Galway, Ireland, Tel: +353 91 493595; E-Mail: [email protected] Received July 27, 2015; Accepted September 22, 2015; Published October 02, 2015 Citation: Raghavan V, Fan HM, Dockery P, Wheatley A, Keogh I, et al. Dye-free near-infrared surface-enhanced Raman scattering nanoprobes for bioimaging and high-performance photothermal cancer therapy.

Near-infrared surface-enhanced Raman scattering (NIR SERS) imaging is now a promising molecular imaging technology due to its narrow spectral bandwidth, low background interference and deep imaging depth. In this work, we report a novel strategy for fabrication of NIR SERS nanoprobes without using any expensive and highly toxic organic dyes. Multifunctional conducting polymer (CP) materials, se...

Development of graphene oxide-wrapped gold nanorods as robust nanoplatform for ultrafast near-infrared SERS bioimaging

The rapid development of near-infrared surface-enhanced Raman scattering (NIR SERS) imaging technology has attracted strong interest from scientists and clinicians due to its narrow spectral bandwidth, low background interference, and deep imaging depth. In this report, the graphene oxide (GO)-wrapped gold nanorods (GO@GNRs) were developed as a smart and robust nanoplatform for ultrafast NIR SE...

Ultrasmall biomolecule-anchored hybrid GdVO4 nanophosphors as a metabolizable multimodal bioimaging contrast agent.

Multimodal molecular imaging has recently attracted much attention on disease diagnostics by taking advantage of individual imaging modalities. Herein, we have demonstrated a new paradigm for multimodal bioimaging based on amino acids-anchored ultrasmall lanthanide-doped GdVO4 nanoprobes. On the merit of special metal-cation complexation and abundant functional groups, these amino acids-anchore...

Biomolecular environment, quantification, and intracellular interaction of multifunctional magnetic SERS nanoprobes† †Electronic supplementary information (ESI) available. See DOI: 10.1039/c6an00890a

Multifunctional composite nanoprobes consisting of iron oxide nanoparticles linked to silver and gold nanoparticles, Ag-Magnetite and Au-Magnetite, respectively, were introduced by endocytic uptake into cultured fibroblast cells. The cells containing the non-toxic nanoprobes were shown to be displaceable in an external magnetic field and can be manipulated in microfluidic channels. The distribu...

Micro-competition system for Raman quantification of multiple glycans on intact cell surface† †Electronic supplementary information (ESI) available: Experimental details and supplementary figures. See DOI: 10.1039/c5sc01031d Click here for additional data file.

A micro-competition system is designed for simultaneous quantification of multiple glycans on intact cell surfaces, by integrating two-surface–one-molecule competition with surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The micro-competition is achieved among multiple-polysaccharide-coated gold nanostars functionalized silica bubbles, target cells and gold nanoprobes at a micron scale. The gold nano...
